Jean at 50: A Celebration of the People and Moments That Define Us
For 50 years, Jean has been a familiar and beloved presence at The Eliot — welcoming guests through the doors with warmth, kindness, and an unmatched knowledge of the building and its community.
While Jean is known as the doorman at The Eliot, his role has always been so much more. He is a historian of the building, a keeper of its stories, and a familiar face who has helped define the experience of arriving home. He remembers the names and faces of countless guests, recognizes generations of visitors, and knows The Eliot like the backof his hand — every corner, every detail, and every story that has unfolded within its walls.
To mark this special milestone, we gathered with the people who have been part of Jean’s journey — guests, friends, neighbors, longtime supporters, and members of the community. Four-legged friends joined the celebration as well, adding to the warmth and spirit of the occasion.
The gathering was a reflection of the countless connections Jean has built over the years. For many guests, seeing Jean is a familiar moment they look forward to each time they return. His memory, kindness, and genuine care have turned everyday interactions into lasting relationships.
Jean has become part of The Eliot’s history, carrying with him decades of memories, stories, and connections that make the building truly special. His dedication and deep connection to the community have created a legacy that extends far beyond his role.
Here’s to Jean — a storyteller, a historian, a welcoming presence, and an unforgettable part of The Eliot’s story. Here’s to the next 50!

The Ultimate Boston Weekend Guide: Best Things to Do Near The Eliot Hotel
Boston is one of those cities that feels like it was designed for a perfect weekend. History at every corner, world-class museums, championship sports, incredible food, and some of the most walkable, beautiful urban streets in the country. And when you base yourself at The Eliot Hotel on Commonwealth Avenue, every one of Boston's best experiences is practically at your doorstep.
Whether you are visiting for the first time or returning for the tenth, this guide covers the best things to do near The Eliot Hotel — from morning walks to late-night dinners.
Commonwealth Avenue — the tree-lined boulevard where The Eliot has stood since 1925 — is itself one of Boston's great pleasures. A morning walk along the mall or a stroll to the Public Garden (where Swan Boats glide in season and the famous Make Way for Ducklings sculpture stands) sets a tone for the day that is hard to beat.
Newbury Street is just a 5-minute walk from the hotel. Boston's most celebrated shopping and dining corridor, it is lined with boutiques, galleries, and restaurants that range from casual to Michelin-worthy. Even if you are not shopping, it is worth a walk.
Boston Common & The Freedom Trail
The oldest public park in the United States is the starting point of the Freedom Trail, a 2.5-mile walking path through 16 historic sites including the Massachusetts State House, Paul Revere's House, and the Old North Church.
Fenway Park
Home of the Boston Red Sox and one of the most iconic sports venues in the world. The stadium dates to 1912, and whether you catch a game or take one of the guided tours, it is a bucket-list experience. The Eliot is one of the best-located hotels near Fenway Park in all of Boston.
Museum of Fine Arts (MFA)
One of the world's great art museums, with nearly 500,000 works across art, architecture, and culture. The Eliot offers a dedicated Museum of Fine Arts Package that includes VIP MFA access, overnight accommodations, and breakfast at UNI.
Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum
Designed after a 15th-century Venetian palace, this museum houses over 2,500 pieces of art collected personally by its founder. The garden courtyard alone is worth the trip.
New England Aquarium
A favorite for families, the Aquarium's 187,000-gallon tank is home to hundreds of species and a living coral reef. It has been a leader in marine conservation since 1969.
Institute of Contemporary Art
For lovers of modern and contemporary art, the ICA on Boston's Waterfront offers both permanent and rotating exhibitions that push boundaries in the best possible way.

Why The Eliot Hotel is Boston's Best-Kept Secret for a Luxury Back Bay Stay
Boston's Back Bay is one of the most beautiful urban neighborhoods in the United States. Tree-lined Commonwealth Avenue, brownstone facades, the Public Garden just around the corner — it is the kind of setting that makes a city feel timeless. And right at the center of it all, since 1925, stands The Eliot Hotel.
If you have been searching for a luxury boutique hotel in Back Bay Boston, you have found it. Here is why The Eliot consistently earns its reputation as one of the best hotels in the city.
A 100-Year-Old Landmark, Completely Reimagined
The Eliot Hotel celebrated its centennial by doing something bold: transforming all 95 guestrooms and suites from the ground up. Led by Boston-based interior designer Alix Keating, the redesign embraced a quiet luxury philosophy — residential warmth layered with refined details, Italian marble bathrooms, and soothing fabrics that make you feel like you are staying in a very elegant home, not just a hotel room.
The result is a property that feels deeply personal. When guests describe The Eliot, words like "home," "calm," and "effortless" come up again and again. That is no accident — it is the design language speaking.
Location That Cannot Be Beaten
At 370 Commonwealth Avenue, The Eliot sits in one of the most coveted addresses in Boston. Consider what is within walking distance:
- Newbury Street — 5-minute walk to Boston's premier shopping and dining strip
- Fenway Park — Home of the Red Sox, reachable in minutes
- The Public Garden & Boston Common — The oldest park in the country, just steps away
- The Charles River Esplanade — Perfect for a morning run or evening stroll
- Hynes Convention Center MBTA stop — One block away on the Green Line
Whether you are visiting for a Red Sox game, a college campus tour (MIT, Harvard, Boston University, Northeastern, and Berklee are all nearby), a corporate trip, or simply a romantic escape, the location makes every plan easier.
The Rooms: Elegant, Spacious, Suite-Forward
Most accommodations at The Eliot are suites, which sets this property apart from larger Boston hotels. Options include:
- Deluxe Guestrooms — Queen bed or two doubles; ideal for solo travelers and couples
- One-Bedroom Suites — Separate living room with French doors and queen sleeper sofa; ideal for families
- Two-Bedroom Suites — Two full marble bathrooms and generous common space; ideal for extended stays or groups
Every room includes complimentary Wi-Fi, flat-screen HD TVs with streaming, mini-bars, signature bathrobes, room service, soundproofed windows that open, umbrellas, and complimentary overnight shoeshine — a small touch that says a lot about the standard of care here.
Walk into The Eliot lobby and you are immediately greeted by something unexpected: a working art installation. The Reconstruction Clock by Dutch designer Maarten Baas — part of his celebrated Real Time series — permanently calls the lobby home. Time is redrawn by hand, continuously, before your eyes. It is the kind of thing you can only experience in person.
Alongside the clock, lobby sculptures by Bill Thompson and paintings by James Nares signal that The Eliot is not just a place to sleep — it is a place to experience.
Rates at The Eliot start from $375 per night, and a range of curated packages — from romantic escapes to the Museum of Fine Arts Package — add exceptional value to your visit. Whether you are planning a weekend trip, a family reunion visit, or a business stay, The Eliot Hotel in Boston's Back Bay has everything you need to make it memorable.
Reserve your room today at eliothotel.com or call 617-267-1607.

Summer in Back Bay: Moments Just Beyond The Eliot Door
Summer has a way of bringing Back Bay to life-and from the steps of The Eliot Hotel, it’s all right there in motion.
The neighborhood feels brighter this time of year. Tree-lined Commonwealth Avenue fills with café tables, lingering conversations, and visitors moving easily between parks, shops, and cultural moments that make Boston feel both historic and alive.
Copley Square is already hinting at what’s ahead, with a striking oversized soccer installation marking Boston’s anticipation for FIFA World Cup 2026. Just a few blocks away, the city is preparing for The Great Elephant Migration beginning August 7-an open-air installation of one hundred life-sized elephant sculptures that will transform Back Bay into a walking gallery celebrating art, conservation, and community.
July brings its own rhythm. Open Newbury turns Newbury Street into a pedestrian-friendly promenade, perfect for wandering, shopping, and people-watching. Nearby, the Boston Public Garden, Commonwealth Avenue Mall, and Charles River Esplanade offer some of the city’s most iconic summer walks-shaded, scenic, and just minutes from The Eliot.
The season’s calendar is full of classic Boston moments: the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular on July 4, Shakespeare on the Common, courtyard concerts at the Boston Public Library, Eataly’s Summer Block Party, and a mix of pop-up fitness classes, workshops, and outdoor events throughout the neighborhood.
Summer is also best experienced at the table. Back Bay’s dining scene moves outdoors, with patios and sidewalk seating coming alive in the warm evenings. At UNI Boston, guests can enjoy inventive Japanese cuisine and signature cocktails on the patio-one of the most relaxed and lively spots in the neighborhood during the summer months.
Whether you’re visiting for a weekend or rediscovering the city from home, summer in Back Bay is best experienced slowly-on foot, outdoors, and just beyond your door at The Eliot Hotel.
"The Art of Time: Maarten Baas Unveiled"
Last month, we had the pleasure of gathering in our lobby to unveil a remarkable new addition to The Eliot: the Reconstruction Clock by Dutch designer Maarten Baas.Friends of the hotel, neighbors, and members of Boston’s design community joined us for an evening of Champagne and conversation as we celebrated the installation of this extraordinary work. Known for blurring the line between art and design, Baas created the Reconstruction Clock as part of his celebrated Real Time series by Maarten Baas, where time is continually redrawn by hand. The piece transforms the simple act of telling time into a living performance, an ever-changing moment unfolding in real time.
The clock has now found its permanent home in The Eliot lobby, where guests and visitors can pause, watch, and experience time in a completely different way.
At The Eliot, we have always believed that hospitality and art belong together. With works throughout the hotel, including the lobby sculpture by Bill Thompson and paintings by James Nares, the addition of Maarten Baas’ clock continues our tradition of celebrating creativity within our historic space.
We are especially grateful to Carpenters Workshop Gallery for their collaboration in bringing this special installation to The Eliot.
If you missed the unveiling, we invite you to stop by the lobby and see it for yourself. Like the best moments in travel, it’s something that can’t quite be captured in a photograph, only experienced in person.

Spring in Bloom
There are some evenings that feel like a page out of a storybook—and our recent spring pop-up with Maeve of @shopmaeflowers was one of them. To celebrate the launch of Maeve’s beautiful new collection of travel-inspired totes—dreamed up during her adventures through France—we transformed The Eliot’s lobby into a charming Parisian back shop, bursting with seasonal florals, soft light, and a sense of celebration.
